Fo realz…hitting goals and milestones you set for yourself is not magic.
Some people think it is. Some people think there’s x-factors that make some people more successful than others. It’s not. In fact it’s simple. You know all those motivational posts along the likes of:
Do Work Son
It’s basically that.
What is this work you speak of?
But what is work and how do you know you are doing it? How do you keep track? How do you know you are getting better?
Did you hear about the Seinfeld strategy - his method of becoming one of the greatest comedians ever? It’s basically doing work - his work was writing every day (well it was a bit more nuanced than that as we’ll explain in a bit)
In an interview he said the way to be a better comic was to create better jokes and the way to create better jokes was to write every day. But his advice was better than that. He had a gem of a leverage technique he used on himself and you can use it to motivate yourself—even when you don't feel like it.
So far we have write everyday (his work is to write)
He revealed a unique calendar system he uses to pressure himself to write. Here's how it works.
He told me to get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. The next step was to get a big red magic marker. He said for each day that I do my task of writing, I get to put a big red X over that day. "After a few days you'll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You'll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job next is to not break the chain."
Ahh a look into his magical system - wait a minute - it’s just a calendar? That’s it? And you put a red X on it. Cool.
That’s for sure not magic.
And probably the most important advice he gave: Don't break the chain.
This is where some secret sauce comes in. There’s just one rule when it comes to the chain - don’t talk about the chain (haha j/k - fight club
, get it? no, not funny…ok moving on)
The rule is don’t break the chain. He didn’t tell himself to put a red x only if the joke is funny or to do this for one hour a day or to practice it in front of friends. It was super simple goal - write everyday. Simple work.
I love it, it makes sense, and its a core part of SNOWBALL workbook. There's a nice sexy tracker for each week in there and there's also a 12 week tracker for you to keep the chain going.
Check out this girl who learned how to dance using this method
, it’s pretty rad
